ICFRE-COASTAL ECOSYSTEM CENTRE (CEC), VISAKHAPATNAM
Forest Research Institute and Colleges established in 1906 at Dehra Dun and reorganized in 1988 under the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change as Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) is delegated to pursue research on Indian forests and forest products. Chief of the forest produce being timber, aspects related to its care during utility were entrusted to Wood Preservation Branch. Way back in 1931, this branch had perceived the research needs of wood protection under marine conditions of the country having a vast seaboard and bulk timber use for sea trade and resource(s) harvest. The approach however was streamlined under the aegis of Dr. A. Purushotham in 1953 resulting in the setup of “Marine Centres” at Mumbai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai and Visakhapatnam. Subsequently, Thiruvananthapuram Centre was merged with Kochi Centre while Mumbai Centre moved to Goa. In 1977, these centres were detached from Dehra Dun and annexed to Forest Research Laboratory, Bangalore later renamed as Institute of Wood Science and Technology under ICFRE in 1988. During 1998, the four Marine Centres were amalgamated into a single unit – the Wood Biodegradation Centre (Marine) at Visakhapatnam and an independent building with laboratory facilities was created. Now, this is the lone establishment in the entire country for research on timber protection under seawater in its total perspective. Since 1st April 2016, the Centre had been rechristened as ICFRE-Coastal Ecosystem Centre (CEC) and affiliated to the Institute of Forest Biodiversity, Hyderabad.
